Happy New Year!
It's just after 7pm New Year's Eve here in London and I'm afraid to say that I am not up to anything very exciting. Unless you consider playing with Play Doh exciting that is! Funnily enough, none of my friends seem to be doing much this year either - most of them are just at home with a glass of bubbles and a book/movie.
My good friend Steph messaged me from Potato Head Beach Club in Bali saying it had rained solidly for five hours, so the jealousy I had been feeling quickly evaporated! As always the fireworks display in Sydney (pictured above) looked as amazing as ever. I think I better plan to get out and about next NYE.
We hope you are having a great night wherever in the world you are. We will be back to regular posting tomorrow and are looking forward to an exciting year ahead.

Merry Christmas!
We are going to take a few days break over Christmas to spend time with our families, so we will be back writing next week. Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas!
The Instagram images above are from the Hello Kitty makeover that our Christmas tree got last Saturday night. It was great to see the girls faces as they saw the tree in the morning. I think the decorations and small presents scattered around the tree stayed up for about four hours before they had all been tugged down!

Baileys and Coffee Ice
It has been a week of overindulgence and we still have a few days to go until Christmas... I am going to have to seriously hit the gym every day in January before heading off to bikini weather in New Zealand in February!
MP and her family are staying here so I'm not going to write too much. We are having a rare couple of hours of peace now that the girls are in bed and our husbands are at a poker night with their friends down the road.
Another friend came over tonight for a couple of hours and we had some bubbles, glazed ham sandwiches, Christmas mince pies and champagne truffles. She helped us make up small gifts for all of the children coming along to the Christmas lunch we are having at The Stag pub in Hampstead tomorrow. We then finished off the night with a rather retro glass of Baileys with a coffee ice cube.
I made up a pot of coffee in the cafetiere and used my baby puree food cube trays to make extra large coffee ice cubes. I then simply poured over Baileys and swirled the ice around a bit. Delicious!

Backpack for Carry-On Luggage
A couple of years ago when I travelled to the US while I was pregnant I decided to take a backpack as my carry-on luggage. As I explored the streets of San Francisco on my own in the few days before I met up with my husband I found the bag really useful. It was big enough to hold a bottle of water, a map and lots of other items. And I avoided the ache you get with an overloaded handbag hanging off one shoulder. I have since continued to use the backpack as my carry-on luggage. It works well when you have a pram to push and a couple of suitcases to wheel along as well!
I read this post on Laura Tremaine's Hollywood Housewife blog a few months ago. She does a lot of travel and also recommends using a backpack.
I have got a nice satin backpack from Mandarina Duck, so it doesn't look too shabby when I am out and about. It has loads of pockets for keeping things organised and secure.
Here are a couple of other ones that look stylish, yet are roomy and practical. I think black is nice and discreet and doesn't scream out that you are a tourist!

Holiday Rental Essentials - An Address(!) and Directions
Several years ago when I was about fifteen my mum and her friends had rented a holiday house down in Onemana (pictured above) on the Coromandel for a week over Christmas and New Year. As mum's friends were working late on Christmas Eve, mum drove me and their two kids down to Onemana so that we arrived there early evening. This was in the days before the Internet so I am not sure how they found the house to rent - probably through an ad in the newspaper.
Anyway, the directions were to drive to the top of the hill and it was the house with a red roof with a water tank behind it. We arrived early evening and found the house. But, the key they had sent to us didn't fit the door. No problem, we climbed up onto a balcony and found that the door there was unlocked so we let ourselves in. The house configuration didn't quite match our expectations so we rearranged a bit of the furniture then us kids went to sleep. Mum's friends arrived down later that evening and chopped down a pine tree in the back yard (as you do!) and decorated it with Christmas ornaments.
The next day we unwrapped all of our presents in the morning and then the parents stuck the turkey in the oven and set about prepping all the vegetables while us kids went down the road for a swim.
As we were walking back up the hill after our swim we were talking about how the house didn't really match up to the description. We then pointed out another house and said that place could just as easily be the house that was described in the letter from the owner. It had a red roof. A water tank behind the house. And was up the top of the hill. About four doors down from the place we were in.
We got home and pointed the other house out to our parents. Mum's friend went down the road with the key and found that it fit in the door. After a few moments of hysteria (laughter and panic!) - we quickly began packing up the house we had effectively broken in to. We rearranged the furniture as best we could and frantically tried to transfer all of our belongings to the house down the road. There was the turkey and vegetables mid-way through cooking - these had to be transferred to new roasting trays at the other place. There were all the presents that had been unwrapped. All of the groceries, clothes, beach towels etc. We carried the Christmas tree down the road with ornaments flying off in every direction as we raced past the bewildered neighbours who had now come out to see what was happening.
As it happened the owners of the first house turned up later that afternoon and were quite forgiving of the situation. I wrote up the story of our holiday when I got back to school the next year and my teacher told me that we were supposed to write about our actual holidays - not fiction. You wouldn't think it could happen. Perhaps, now in the age of the Internet it wouldn't. But, today's post is saying that something as basic as an address should be a holiday rental essential.
This year when we rented a place in Ibiza, the 'address' was something like: "drive to San Jose, turn right, go for about 1km to the 2nd rubbish bin, turn up the gravel road and there will be a handwritten signpost for the house (Casa Vino Tinto)". We had hoped to be able to just use taxis and not get a rental car for the trip, but upon arrival in Ibiza it was immediately apparent that we had to organise a car. There was no way we could order taxis to collect us from there if we wanted to go out to the beach or a restaurant.
So, as simple as it seems I would say that a proper address (I like the one below) and clear directions and a map should be a holiday rental essential. If a place is off the beaten track and doesn't have an official address, it would be really useful to have a detailed map, GPS coordinates and/or a couple of local taxi drivers who know how to find it.
As a side note on directions I would say that it is good to be aware of different terminology. A guy working at the Orbit In in Palm Springs told us that British people were confused when he gave them the security code for the gate and he said to press the numerical code in followed by the pound key. But, by pound he meant like a tic tac toe board, not the currency symbol. We told him that in the UK we call that the hash key. And the game is called noughts and crosses. Funny!

Tuesday Travel - London
I am so excited that in a few days time I'll be in London for a quick pre Christmas get together with AD. We have a number of things planned including a trip to the 5D Santa's Grotto in the Westfield Shopping Mall with the kids! Hopefully I can get some shopping done too but that is doubtful.
We are also going for dinner at Berners Tavern located in the very hot Edition Hotel which is a collaboration between Ian Schrager and Marriott International. Schrager was a co-owner and founder of Studio 54 and has been credited with inventing the boutique hotel so I'm sure the restaurant is going to look amazing.
We've also planned a big Christmas lunch with our friends and families at a pub and I'm still amazed at how our group of friends seems to have doubled in size in the last few years due to the addition of little ones!
In between these exciting events I'm sure there will be lots of bubbles, canapes, cakes, chocolates, presents and laughter along the way. We'll keep you updated as we go! MP

Hay - Furniture and Accessories
As MP wrote back in November, a traditional bach in New Zealand is a very basic, modest holiday home or beach house. Over time however most of these holiday houses have become more modern and more expensive and tend to contain all the comforts of home.
As you will have seen if you have been following our regular series of posts on a Wednesday we often refer to Ikea as a key place to kit out a holiday house. Now, as much as I love Ikea, there is no way we would want to have absolutely everything from there in our future bach. Nor, will we be likely to fill it with designer goods. It will most likely be a mix of second hand furniture, stuff that we are getting rid of from our own houses and inexpensive buys from local New Zealand stores.
If we do look for any higher end pieces though I think it is hard to go past the Danish brand Hay for quality and design at a comparatively inexpensive price. Below are some of my favourite pieces from their range.
The Hay Strap Mirror in grey (designed by Hay Studio).
The Hay Loop Stand Wardrobe (designed by Leif Joergensen).
The Hay Hee Lounge Chair in light blue (designed by Hee Welling).
The Hay Woody Storage System.
The Hay Pinocchio Rug.
Actually, I would be happy with pretty much anything they do!

Cake, Cheese & Champagne
A few weeks ago we celebrated my daughter's 2nd birthday. I tried out the cat cake from the Australian Woman's Weekly birthday cake book and I was pretty proud of my effort! The assembling and icing took much longer than I thought and getting the icing the right colours was a bit tricky as well.
Switzerland has amazing cheeses and one that I've been meaning to sample is a Vacherin Mont D'or. The cheese is only available from September to April and is moulded and ripened for about 3 weeks in a wooden box. I followed David Lebovitz's advice for baking the cheese and the result was a beautiful soft melted cheese that you spooned onto fresh bread. So delicious! My Swiss friend told me that it is quite common among Swiss people just to have cheese and bread as their dinner. She said that her mum would leave this cheese out at room temperature to ripen for a few hours before serving but the downside was that the whole house didn't smell so nice! I think it's such a great food for sharing that I'm taking one over to AD's place when we visit next week to have as part of our pre Christmas feast. Have a great weekend! MP

Leather Travel Accessories
I love packing to go away - checking things off my packing list and putting bags by the front door means that I am just about off on my next adventure.
The final check before I step out the door is usually of the passports, tickets and money. Last year when I went to New Zealand I had just bought a leather two tone clutch from Gap, similar to the one below, but in purple and blue. I decided to use it to keep all of my travel documents together. It was really useful and then doubled as a bag when I was out and about in NZ. As I had a young baby I only had a nappy/change bag, not my usual handbag and the clutch was a decent size. It could fit a wallet, sunglasses, phone, keys and a small camera, or it could be used as an iPad case.
Here are some other nice leather travel goods - these would make great Christmas gifts.
I love this yellow currency case by Smythson - it's such a good idea - I usually carry different wallets for different currency! This one can be personalised as well and comes in a great range of colours and leathers.
This bespoke travel folio by Anya Hindmarch can also be personalised.
The classic Tiffany blue looks really nice as a patent leather passport cover.
At the less expensive end of the spectrum, there is a simple yellow leather travel wallet by Habitat.
Or, for readers in Australia or New Zealand, this leather travel document wallet by Kikki-K.

Holiday Rental Essentials - Chopping Boards
Today's essential is a chopping board and preferably more than one! Often the chopping boards I come across in our holiday rentals look like they've been used for years and years which doesn't lend itself to making you want to cook! Although on holiday I guess cooking should be kept to a minimum? But you always need to chop ...
A nice chopping board could also double up as a serving platter.
See our blog post here for more serving platter and bowl suggestions.
The ever reliable Ikea provide some great options for chopping boards. I use these ones regularly at home. They are so easy and you can pop them in the dishwasher which is great. Also at a cost of £2 I think that you could definitely afford to replace chopping boards in your holiday rental a few times a year.
I also use an Ikea wooden board for our bread board and I think this board would look nice as a serving platter.

Souvenir Christmas Ornaments
I have just been reading about Christmas tree decorations on the Cup of Jo blog. In particular how some people buy souvenir ornaments every time they go on holiday so that they have a Christmas tree full of holiday memories. I love this idea! I've heard of people who collect souvenir snow globes as well which would also look fun spread all over the mantelpiece at Christmas.
I thought I would collect my daughter post cards from all the places that she goes on holiday. So far she has been to Spain, Switzerland (x 3), Ibiza, New Zealand and Singapore. Not bad for a 22 month old! Decorations could be a better idea though so I'm going to start looking out for those on our next trip.
The handmade decorations with metallic thread detail below are by St. Nicolas and sold at Selfridges. This set of iconic London 'sights' would make a great souvenir and brighten up any Christmas tree.

Poolside Bars
This is the newly-refurbed beach bar at Watsons Bay Hotel in Sydney, Australia. I immediately forwarded it on to AD and said I wished I could meet her there today for some fish and chips (what they're famous for) and a cocktail. I then got thinking about how we could incorporate parts of this design into our future bach. An outdoor bar would be a total luxury. However a poolside bar would top that! We will do a post on swimming pools another day but in the meantime here are some poolside bars to dream about.
You could have your bbq lunch or dinner served to you in this pool!
Having one of the rooms opening out directly onto the pool is a practical option. MP

Christmas Mince Pies
I have always loved Christmas, but it seems extra special now that I have a little girl. Last year we had Christmas in New Zealand and this year we will be going to my husband's parents place, down in Kent, for a few days. It's nice to be able to have a mix of Summer and Winter Christmases.
Even though we aren't actually hosting Christmas at our place, I am hoping to make it look really festive for the next few weeks and start a few family Christmas traditions.
I find I am torn between trying to do a stylish tree this year or a fun one that the kids* will love. I think I will compromise and do a nice display on the mantelpiece and dining table and then something a bit different for the tree.
I'm planning on getting all of the decorations up on Sunday. To completely get into the Christmas spirit I always think it is nice to have Christmas carols playing and have a glass of bubbles or mulled wine accompanied by some Christmas mince pies.
Christmas mince pies are not something that I would usually make myself as I don't love them enough. I'm happy to have one or two for the entire month of December and then not eat them again until the following year.
If I get a chance I like to get them from either St. JOHN or Ottolenghi (Ottolenghi pies pictured in the left of the hamper below), but as I'm not sure if I will get near those places tomorrow I have picked up a pack from Waitrose today.
Most of the newspapers usually do a round-up of all of the different supermarket offerings. I haven't had a chance to read one this year, so I just chose the Heston [Blumenthal] from Waitrose Spiced Shortcrust Mince Pies. I'm sure they will be nice once they are warmed up in the oven and served with a dollop of brandy cream.
You can see the box of pies along with a gold glitter reindeer that I bought in the Instagram picture below. Be sure to follow us on Instagram if you want to see how the decorations turn out.

Lip Gloss
I hate to break the news that neither AD or I are big make up wearers. Sorry! Having said that, one product that we do use regularly is a lip gloss. Especially post beach ... throw on your kaftan, apply some lip gloss and you're ready to party.
With many Christmas gift sets out there it's a great time to stock up on mini sized glosses which are perfect for travelling. I also like how you are able to try out a few different colours.
AD has bought me a Benefit set before which I love using. Just the right amount of sparkle to make you feel special. Here is this year's "Love at first shine" kit which includes 6 of their most popular shades.
Last summer I tried Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector which I was a big fan of. It was easy to apply and made my lips feel plump and super shiny. Clarins have included this in a set dedicated to lips this Christmas. There are also 2 other great looking glosses and a lipstick to try and it comes in a handy little cosmetics bag.
Lancome's Juicy Tubes are a classic. They were launched in 2000 and it was the first lip gloss in a tube. Apparently 11 are sold around the world every minute! The gloss glides on easily and leaves a highly lacquered look on your lips. This set has a great selection of colours, ranging from a nude to a deep reddy pink.
Finally, one lip gloss/balm that I have been meaning to try is a Clinique Chubby Stick. More like a tinted balm, they are loaded with mango and shea butters. Love the names as well. This set includes Pudgy Peony, Two Ton Tomato and Voluptuous Violet. I hope I get one of these in my stocking this year! MP

Holiday Rental Essentials - Clean White Bedlinen
In my family I do 95% of the holiday planning and organisation. I usually leaving booking a rental car to my husband. But that can go quite badly and is a story for another day. Top tip - go with a well-know rental company...
In recent memory I can only really recall two occasions where my husband has been in charge of organising an entire holiday. One was his stag do (bachelor party) which by all accounts went remarkably well. The second was a trip to Amsterdam where he managed to book flights for us on the wrong days. He then proudly announced to a group of friends also flying over that he had booked and paid for the airbnb accommodation. This was without consulting anyone!
Picture, a long narrow flat with one bedroom at the end. The 'sleeps 6' referred to the two sofa beds next to each other in the front room. There was a sort of make-shift kitchen/bathroom between the living area and the bedroom complete with a shower with a see-through door and a fridge with so much frost built up there was no room to put anything inside. I still shudder even now if I picture the mushroom brown ill-fitting bedlinen with the mysterious stains.
As stylist Emily Henderson wrote in a blog post last week following her stay at an airbnb place in NYC, sheets should be white. And very clean.
So, that is our holiday rental essential item for this week - crisp, clean, white bedlinen.
We have said before in this series, that it is a good idea to look at what a nice hotel provides and then emulate or improve on that experience. A bed should always look inviting - somewhere that you can't wait to get into and are then in no hurry to get out of. I think it is lovely to have a fitted and flat sheet, topped with a cotton bedcover. Then as, discussed in an earlier post, provide additional blankets.
This bed at Domus Civita, a boutique guest house in Italy looks very clean and simple. The bedcover is by Ikea!
What are your thoughts on bedlinen? Do you love white? Does it need to be a high thread count cotton? Or do you have other preferences?

Travelling Essential - A Scarf
The last few times we have been on holiday I was so busy organising the girls that I totally forgot to pack some important things for myself. Not good. Last time when we went to Milan I forgot a jacket which I did need on a chilly October weekend!
There are however some things that I love travelling with and one thing I do love to pack for a plane journey is a scarf. It's so versatile and comforting and much much better than the synthetic and scratchy airline blankets!
It would be amazing to have something like this cashmere wrap:
But an oversized scarf does the job and looks very chic as well:
This cashmere scarf by Botto Giuseppe is lovely. It's described as a truly tactile and versatile accessory as you can wear it in many different ways due to being a seamless construction. Perfect!
