Holiday Rental Essentials - Plungers

OK, plungers weren't originally on our radar as something that would be a holiday rental essential - but after reading this post on A Cup of Jo the other day we have decided to add them.

We have previously written about the need to have a few basic cleaning supplies - a broom and a toilet brush etc - stuff that guests can use during their stay to help keep your rental clean and tidy.

A plunger for sinks and a separate plunger for toilets could help prevent the need for an emergency plumber to be called. OXO and simplehuman (pictured above) both make discreet toilet plungers that are concealed in a canister - we like these ones as they are stylish enough to be kept in the bathroom, rather than hidden away in a cupboard.

Quillan, France

We recently travelled to Quillan in the south of France to stay at a friend's beautiful house which is available to rent here.

We were welcomed with a lovely basket of local produce including a bottle of the local sparkling wine called Blanquette de Limoux which was very nice, especially after a 10 hour journey to get there!

Quillan itself is a sleepy town based along the river Aude which runs along the back of the house. We filled our days by visiting local swimming pools and market towns and just relaxing at the house. There was a very well equipped kitchen and lots of utensils which made cooking easy.

We drove to Carcassonne for a day trip which is about 45 minutes away. The walled city is breathtaking and apparently was the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty. It's the second most visited tourist attraction in France behind the Eiffel Tower which I found surprising.

From there we drove back up north to spend a few days in the heart of Provence. Stay tuned for details of that trip!

Holiday Rental Essentials - Cutlery (enough)

A few weeks ago we went to stay at a friend's house near Carcassonne. It's funny because now whenever I go into a holiday rental I always look out for all the things that we've been listing as essentials and text AD immediately to tell her what's good or missing.

The house we were staying in was really well equipped and there wasn't much that I could fault. The only minor issue was that there wasn't enough cutlery. They had 4 pieces of each but when using a dishwasher it's definitely handy to have extra.

Blow

I've just come back from a quick trip to London where we had a friend's wedding to attend. A few weeks ago AD and I decided that we wanted to get our hair and make up done so I booked us into Blow in Covent Garden. Once you're seated in the salon you can scroll through 10 hair styles and choose either a blow dry or blow up and there are 3 make up looks to choose from as well. The hair part takes about 30 minutes and that includes a wash. The hairdressers we had were both really competent and had no trouble getting our thick long hair into sophisticated looking up do's!

The make up took around 15 minutes and I enjoyed having this done as when I put on make up it always looks the same so it was really nice to have something different. So 45 minutes and £36 later you're ready to go! It was a luxury to go home, pop on my dress and be ready without having to worry about hair and make up. AD said that it would be good also to be able to change into your outfit at the salon and then go straight to your event. When we were leaving they were also setting up for a hen party and this would be a perfect activity for a group of girls (or guys!).

So Blow Ltd ... definitely recommend!

Ginger Crunch

I have been eating lots of ginger flavoured things lately - ginger yogurt, ginger oat biscuits and I've also been drinking ginger tea and ginger beer. I just can't seem to get enough of it. Yesterday I made a batch of one of New Zealand's favourite slices - ginger crunch.

Many New Zealand recipe books offer their own variation on this treat - but I always use the one from the Edmonds Cookery Book. My mum tries to encourage me to modernise it with the addition of chopped pistachios or something. But, I stick to the original recipe as written below. I actually double the ingredients for the icing though as I like it nice and thick. I also don't bother with the kneading step for the base. I simply mix the ingredients together and the press the crumbly mixture into a tin. I like to use a square cake tin with a loose base as it is really easy to get the slice out of this.

David Lebovitz wrote a post on this slice in 2013. You can see his comments about finding an alternative for golden syrup there.

Ginger Crunch (as found in the Edmonds Cookery Book)

125 g butter, softened
1/2 cup sugar
11/2 cups standard plain flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon ground ginger

Ginger Icing
75 g butter
3/4 cup icing sugar
2 tablespoons golden syrup
1 teaspoon ground ginger

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Sift flour, baking powder and ginger together. Mix into creamed mixture. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured board. Knead well. Press dough into a greased 20 x 30 cm sponge roll tin. Bake at 190 degrees Celsius for 20 to 25 minutes or until light brown. Pour hot Ginger Icing over base while hot and cut into squares before it gets cold.
Makes 24.

Ginger Icing
In a small saucepan combine butter, icing sugar, golden syrup and ginger. Heat until butter is melted, stirring constantly.

Holiday Rental Essentials - Ashtrays

I don't smoke and never have, but one thing I would include at my holiday rental would be ashtrays. Even if you have specified that your property is non-smoking, there is a chance that guests may choose to smoke outside. If you don't want to spend time sweeping up ash and picking cigarette butts out of your plants, then I would provide a couple of ashtrays.

You can pick up ashtrays at next to nothing from a wide variety of stores. Zara Home always have a good range of designs available. The smaller flowers porcelain one pictured above is currently 99p in their summer sale.

Spanish Tomatoes

Whenever you are in Europe the tomatoes always taste so much better than in the UK. On our recent trip to Sitges, Spain there were a couple of stand out tomato dishes for me and the success of these dishes I think is based on the full flavour of ripe tomatoes. When produce is this good you don't need to do much to them to turn them into a delicious dish.

One of the restaurants we stumbled upon was La Picara. The tapas looked great although we went for a 3 course meal including a drink for only 13 euros! My first course was a gazpacho which was perfect for a scorching hot day.
The recipe is basically whizzing up some tomatoes, green and red peppers, cucumber, garlic and olive oil and chill. The inclusion of bread also gives the soup body and creaminess. Mine came accompanied with little bowls of croutons and a dish of chopped red and green pepper and onion. So yummy.

The other tomato based dish that you see everywhere is Pan con Tomato (bread with tomato).
Basically, toast some bread, rub a clove of garlic on it, smear a ripe tomato over the bread and top with olive oil and salt.

The tomatoes in Switzerland are very good so I will include these two dishes into my summer repertoire!

Holiday Rental Essentials - An Emergency Kit

This week's holiday rental essential is something that you hope every rental will have, but that you won't actually need to use - an emergency kit.

The contents of your emergency kit will vary depending on where your property is located - but basic items could include: a battery powered radio, batteries, spare light bulbs, a flashlight/torch, candles, matches/lighters and a first aid kit.

If your property is located in an area that is prone to cyclones, tornadoes or flooding, you may want to consider a more comprehensive emergency kit, such as the one detailed here.

Girl's Kaftans

I've been looking for a kaftan for my eldest daughter but am not having much luck. We're in high summer now and with so much time being spent at the pool I try to make sure the girls cover up as soon as they're out. My youngest has a couple of hand me downs and my favourite is a Seafolly one. I have found a few that could work but still nothing that I absolutely love.

This one below from Next looks like it would be OK and at £15 it's quite reasonable. I think I prefer longer sleeves though.

This Rikshaw Design kurta would be perfect if only a bit longer in length. The print is cute.

And if you didn't have a budget this Melissa Odabash one (£60) would be so beautiful!

Sitges, Spain

A week ago we went on a girl's weekend to Sitges, Spain. Sitges is a small beachside town, around 45 minutes outside of Barcelona. When planning the weekend we found that there wasn't much in the way of information on the Internet, so we thought we'd share some of our trip with you.

We were a group of seven girls, celebrating our friend's upcoming wedding. Sitges might be considered a strange choice of destination for a hen's (bachelorette) weekend as it is renowned for being the gay capital of Spain. For us though it was perfect: easy to get to, inexpensive, great beaches, sunny weather, yummy food, good bars and a few shops.

We stayed at the Medium Hotel. This hotel is in a great location, amongst lots of shops and bars and within five minutes walk of both the train station and the beach. The hotel has a central courtyard with a really nice pool and a bar area with tables and chairs and loungers. A decent breakfast was included with the room rate and could be eaten inside or at tables around the pool.

We arrived on Friday evening and once we were checked in we walked down to the seafront and popped into a bar for our first glass of sangria and some patatas bravas. We then walked up to El Cable and found the last remaining table and sat down to order a huge array of tapas.

Even though we were stuffed we then managed to only walk a few hundred metres before stopping again for gelato. There are gelato stores and frozen yogurt stores all over Sitges.

Feeling rather full and tired at this stage, we contemplated going back to the hotel for a quick nap, but decided we would be better to just stay out. We headed down towards Parrots, a pub that had been recommended by a friend who had visited Sitges before. The intersection where Parrots is was already really busy, but we found an outside table at a bar (I think most of the bars in this area have the same owner) and sat down and watched the drag queen cabaret singer Lady Diamond performing outside Parrots restaurant.

On Saturday, we had breakfast at the hotel then managed to snag seven of the loungers around the pool. For the first time in years, we sat by the pool all day - leaving our loungers only briefly to pop out to the bakery to grab a bite to eat, and taking turns to have a quick stroll around the shops. The bartender at the bar by the pool was making us delicious icy cocktails of rum, pineapple and fresh mint.

As I mentioned earlier, we found hardly any newspaper, magazine or blog articles on Sitges before our trip. I did however, pick up a few tips from Tripadvisor including several recommendations for drinks at the rooftop bars of either Hotel Platjador or Hotel Avenida Sofia. On Saturday evening we headed down to the Sky Bar at Hotel Avenida Sofia. This is a bar on the roof of a hotel near the beach, with 360 degree views. There was a DJ playing music, a couple of people dining and a few other groups having drinks. It was a nice place to start the evening, watching the sunset and drinking cold champagne.

We then walked along the beach to a restaurant called Fragata, that is tucked in right at the end of the strip. The food here was delicious, although we didn't cope so well with eating so late and made the mistake of filling up on too many bread rolls before our other courses arrived.

I headed home after the meal, but the other girls stayed out for a few more hours in search of a club to go dancing in. The first of the successful chain of Pacha clubs originated in Sitges and the plan was to head to the new Sweet Pacha club at 2am when it started to get going. However, after a few drinks, the girls headed back to the hotel to bed instead.

This was probably for the best as on Sunday morning after breakfast we jumped into taxis from the train station and headed to the spa at Dolce Sitges, a hotel about 10 minutes from where we were staying. We spent a few hours at the spa having a selection of treatments from pedicures through to facials and massages. The hotel itself is not one that I would choose to stay in as it looks to be primarily geared towards conferences and is outside of Sitges town. However, everyone loved their treatments, so we would all recommend a visit to the hotel spa.

For a late lunch, I went with MP to a cute place called La Picara where we both had the excellent value daily special menu.

The afternoon was spent swimming, napping and walking around the town and beach. Everyone made a few purchases for themselves and for their children.

Later that night we went for paella down at Restaurante Costa Dorada. This restaurant had been so busy during the day that we couldn't get in, but the wind picked up by the time we arrived in the evening, so we didn't linger too long.

We raced back to the hotel to get more layers and then ended up just going for drinks at the bar next door.

On our final morning, we rented loungers down at the beach. The sand was clean and soft and it was lovely to have a couple of dips in the sea.

All in all, it was a great getaway. We helped our friend finalise many of the details for her wedding, we had lots of laughs and got lots of rest despite quickly adjusting to the late night Spanish lifestyle. We had great meals, and exclaimed nearly every time the bill came how cheap the wine and Cava was. The only downer came right at the very end of the trip when one of the girls in our group realised that her wallet had been stolen by the man that had helped us get onto the train to the airport.

Holiday Rental Essentials - Information Pack

When you stay at a hotel the reception is likely to be equipped with a map that you can take and they're also there on hand to answer any questions you may have re directions, offer restaurant recommendations, book you a taxi etc.

When staying at a holiday rental it's extremely helpful to have all this information there waiting for your guests.

Essential things to include would be:

Maps of the area (love the cute one above!)
Restaurant recommendations with brochures or cards
Local taxi numbers
Public transport timetables
Things to do in area eg. pools, adventure parks
Beach recommendations
Local doctors, chemists and A & E clinics

Anything else?

Tiles

We are just back from a long weekend in Spain - be sure to check back on Friday for our trip report. While wandering around Sitges I came across this tapas bar pictured above and had to snap a pick of the tiling.

I am a big fan of this look and would love to one day have an outdoor kitchen featuring beautiful tiling.

In the meantime, I am on the lookout for some tiles to use as a centrepiece like in the pictures below. These would look great on an outdoor table when you are dining outside this summer - they also double as trivets to protect your table from hot dishes or water marks.
