Culling our CDs (etc)

We have recently been thinking about moving. We have been in our current place since December, 2008 and have pretty much outgrown it. We haven't found anything that we like yet and aren't even really sure what part of London we want to live in with our next move. But, I have started the dreaded task of clearing junk. And, there is alot of junk.

I find it hard to be ruthless, but I am learning. I have cleared an entire cupboard that was full of coats that were either waiting to be repaired (missing buttons), or simply never worn. I've cleared huge piles of filing - old bills, receipts, plane tickets, brochures for language courses etc. And somewhat sadly thrown huge piles of magazines and clippings. If I want to cook something I either use my recipe books, blogs or Pinterest. I never hunt through my piles of pages that I have torn from magazines and newspapers. Same goes for interior decorating inspiration.

I cleared out the bathroom cupboards - throwing things that were old or expired. I put a pile of surplus make-up on eBay and managed to sell that. Who knew?!

I have an entire attic crammed full of bags and boxes that I need to attack one weekend - but that will require my husband taking my little toddler to see her grandaprents for the weekend as she tries to climb the ladder if she knows that I am up there. I've found that toddlers and organising your house just don't really work as a rule.

I am trying to tackle one area at a time as otherwise it all seems a bit overwhelming. I wouldn't say that I am a hoarder. But, let's just say that I have got an entire section in the attic that is for our future bach* - picnic supplies, duvet covers, cushions, Le Creuset dishes etc. And, the purchase of the bach might still be a couple of years away.

Anyway, that is an entirely different post - that we will leave for another day. Back to the clearing.

I stopped buying books for myself a couple of years ago when I got my Kindle. My husband still buys hardbacks though and we also have quite a growing collection of books for my daughter. To clear some shelf space this week I have decided to get rid of all of our CDs. I'm selling the ones that I can using Music Mapgpie and the rest will all go to Oxfam. We haven't listened to CDs for the past few years since we have subscribed to Spotify so it is quite satisfying to get rid of them.

As for the DVDs, well at this stage I am hanging onto them. For the future bach!

Here's hoping we buy the bach in time before Netflix etc have got to the stage where DVDs are completely phased out.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you still have an extensive CD and DVD collection? Perhaps some of you still have VHS tapes?!
